Prater attended Proviso West in Illinois and was one of the most highly sought-after recruits in the country. A member of the USA Today All-USA first team, Prater was named a SuperPrep All-American, a Parade All-American, a Chicago Tribune first team All-State selection, among numerous other honors. He tallied 64 catches for 1,151 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2009 as a senior. He also played some defensive back in high school and lettered in basketball.
Prater redshirted at the University of Southern California in 2010. In 2011 he missed the vast majority of the season due to an injury as Prater only caught one pass for six yards. In spring of 2012 he announced he was transferring to Northwestern.
Prater was eligible to play right away and did so in 2012. He caught his first two passes as a Wildcat at Syracuse for 21 yards. In his home debut, Prater tallied three receptions for 24 yards, with a long of 16 in a win over Vanderbilt. In the Gator Bowl against Mississippi State, Prater caught a pair of passes as Northwestern won the program’s first bowl game since 1949.
In 2013 Prater tallied nine receptions for 59 yards, including three catches against Syracuse and an 18-yard reception against Maine.
