League Cup Preview: Notts County out to silence Kop, Premier League teams enter
Notts County travel to Anfield to face Liverpool in the League Cup second round hoping to stun the competition’s most-successful club.
The Premier League side have a prestigious history in the tournament, having lifted the trophy on a record eight occasions.
The last triumph was in 2012 as Liverpool overcame Cardiff City at Wembley in a dramatic penalty shoot-out following a 2-2 draw at the end of extra time.
Prior to that success two seasons ago, Liverpool's previous victory in the League Cup came at the Millennium Stadium in 2003 as they beat fierce rivals Manchester United 2-0. Steven Gerrard opened the scoring in the first half before Michael Owen made sure of the result in the 86th minute.
Liverpool have made an unbeaten start to their 2013-14 domestic league campaign with 1-0 successes over Stoke City and Aston Villa in the first two games of the new Premier League season.
As for Notts County, aside from their first-round victory over Fleetwood Town in the League Cup, Chris Kiwomya's men have lost three of their first four League One fixtures and find themselves in the relegation zone.
Kiwomya, the former Ipswich Town forward, will be hoping his players can conjure up a memorable cup upset when they head to Merseyside.
Other second-round ties to catch the eye include two local derbies on Tuesday night, as Doncaster Rovers host Leeds United in an all-Yorkshire affair, while Preston North End make the short trip to neighbours Burnley as the two Lancashire clubs collide.
Premier League trio Everton, Aston Villa and West Ham are in action against Stevenage, Rotherham United and Cheltenham Town respectively, as sides bid to make it all the way to the showpiece Wembley occasion on March 2.
Elsewhere, Fulham travel to Burton Albion of League Two, Football League new-boys Newport County head to West Brom and Morecambe will hope to cause a shock when they host Newcastle United.
