Liga MX Wrap: Club America battle past Atlante, Veracruz stay top
By Football News
Club America clinched their second win in three games as they came from behind to win 4-2 at Atlante on Saturday.
The defending Clausura champions, Miguel Herrera's men fell behind in the 58th minute in Cancun, as Alberto Garcia put the hosts ahead just before the hour mark.
However, the visitors quickly turned things around Maza Rodriguez and Narciso Mina scoring two goals in three minutes to put Club America in command with 21 minutes to play.
Atlante - who are yet to win this term and sit bottom of the league - levelled things up again after 74 minutes through Diego Jimenez, but a penalty from striker Raul Jimenez and a late goal from Andres Andrade - who found the net less than a minute after Luis Gerardo Venegas had been sent off for the hosts - ensured victory for Club America.
Veracruz stay top, despite only managing a goalless draw with Puebla on Sunday, while second and third-place Morelia and Club Leon also played out a stalemate.
Toluca drew for the third time in five games as Edy Brambila equalised in the 90th minute to earn a 2-2 draw with Santos Laguna.
Javier Orozco and Oribe Peralta had inspired a second-half turnaround for Santos after Carlos Esquivel had put Toluca ahead, but Brambila struck in the dying embers to deny the visitors all three points.
Atlas were another team to benefit from a late equaliser, attacker Vicente Vuoso scoring in the third minute of stoppage time a 1-1 draw with Pachuca after Fernando Cavenaghi had opened the scoring just after the hour.
A last-minute penalty from veteran Carlos Ochoa gave a Chiapas a 1-1 draw in Queretaro. The forward stepped up to convert from 12 yards after Diego de la Torre had been sent off for a handball inside the penalty area. Esteban Paredes had scored the hosts’ goal in the 27th minute.
Last year's Clausura finalists Cruz Azul eased to a 3-1 over Guadalajara.
Joao Rojas put Guillermo Vazquez's men in front 10 minutes before the interval, before Rafael Marquez Lugo levelled from the spot five minutes into the second half.
It was Cruz Azul who would eventually come through, thanks to a second from Rojas and a Jeronimo Amione effort, ensuring the points for the hosts.
Tigres UANL were also 3-1 winners against Monterrey on Sunday, Alan Pulido netting a double and captain Lucas Lobos also finding the net for Ricardo Ferretti's charges.
Humberto Suazo was the only scorer for Monterrey, who had Bernardo Hernandez dismissed seven mintues from time.
Elsewhere, Tijuana comfortably overcame Pumas UNAM 2-0. Fidel Martinez and Raul Enriquez got the ghoals at the Estadio Caliente as the hosts brushed aside the 10-man Pumas, whose hopes were effectively ended when Candido Ramirez was sent off midway through the second half for his second bookable offence.
