Liga Sagres wrap: Benfica pull clear of Porto
Apr 07, 2013 8:25 PM EST
Benfica have moved seven points clear at the top of the Liga Sagres standings in Portugal with a 2-0 victory over Olhanense.
Eduardo Salvio and Nemanja Matic scored the goals for Benfica, who won in Olhao for the first time in three years and took another step towards the Portuguese league title.
Benfica, who have yet to lose in Liga Sagres this season, lead title rivals Porto by seven points, although the latter are yet to play this week.
After a goalless first half at the Estadio Jose Arcanjo on Sunday, Benfica hit the front through Salvio's long-range goal in the 52nd minute.
Just 12 minutes later and Benfica doubled their lead with Matic running onto a loose ball just outside the area and curling his shot past Olhanense goalkeeper Rafael Bracalli.
Porto will have the opportunity to reduce Benfica's lead to four points if they defeat fourth-placed Sporting Braga on Monday.
Estoril moved up to fourth in the Portuguese league standings as they smashed Nacional 4-0 with Carlos Eduardo scoring a brace.
In a frantic start to the match, Estoril effectively ended Nacional's resistance with three goals in the opening 12 minutes.
Carlitos scored after five minutes at the Estadio Antonio Coimbra da Mota before Eduardo grabbed his first goal three minutes later.
Luis Leal then added a third in the 12th minute and four minutes after half-time Eduardo's second goal ensured a big victory for Estoril, while Nacional had Miguel Rodrigues sent off in the second half.
The win took Estoril from seventh into fifth on 35 points with Maritimo (34 points) just behind and Sporting Lisbon, Rio Ave and Vitoria Guimaraes all on 33.
In other Liga Sagres results, Rio Ave defeated Vitoria Setubal 2-1, while Guimaraes and Gil Vicente won by the same score line over Beira Mar and Academica respectively.
