Lions Have A “Ton Of Interest” In Sammy Watkins
By Allen Kim
The 2014 NFL Draft is still weeks away, but rumors of the Detroit Lions having a strong interest in WR Sammy Watkins is generating some buzz.
Watkins is widely considered to be a can’t-miss prospect, and he’s virtually guaranteed to be a Top 8 pick. There hasn’t been more hype surrounding a wide receiver prospect since A.J. Green and Julio Jones were taken out of the 2011 draft, respectively, with the No. 4 and No. 6 overall picks.
The one problem for the Lions is that the chances of Watkins falling to them at No. 10 is slim to none. That means that they would have to trade up to get him, and even our own draft expert, David Siegerman, thinks they may be go as high as the St. Louis Rams’ No. 2 overall pick to get him.
“Starting to think #Lions might trade up to No. 2 to take Sammy Watkins,” Siegerman tweeted out.
Coach Jim Caldwell and GM Martin Mayhew attended Watkins’ Pro Day workout at Clemson, so it’s clear there’s some interest. Whether they’re willing to trade up that high, however, remains to be seen. The Lions are in dire need of receiver help behind Calvin Johnson, and Watkins would pair with Johnson to potentially be one of the most dominant receiver duos in the league.
