Lisbon derby postponed on safety grounds
By Football News
Sunday's Lisbon derby between Benfica and Sporting Lisbon has been postponed after parts of the Estadio da Luz roof fell off in high winds.
With only two points separating the top two, there had been high expectation for the Primeira Liga clash, however the game will have to be replayed following concerns with the stadium.
A full house was expected for the match, but insulation material began falling from the roof prior to kick off as high winds battered the Portuguese capital.
After attempts to make the stadium safe for players and spectators failed, it was announced that the contest would be postponed on security grounds, with Sporting confirming the news on their official Twitter page.
A date for the match to be replayed has reportedly already been agreed, but no official announcement has been made regarding when these two rivals will meet again.
When the two sides met in the league earlier this season, Benfica needed a Lazar Markovic goal to earn a point after Fredy Montero had given Sporting an early lead.
The news could raise concerns with UEFA, with the stadium set to host the Champions League final in May.
