Louis Nix III was born in Jacksonville, Florida on July 31, 1991. A nose tackle for the Houston Texans, he was selected during the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Prior to entering the NFL, he played college football for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

For high school, Nix attended William M. Raines in his hometown, where he was credited with 50 tackles and 10 sacks during his senior year in 2009. He was subsequently ranked 59th on the Sporting News Top 100 list and named to the Florida Super 75 team. At the conclusion of his high school career, he was selected to appear at the Under Armour All-America Game and received recruitment offers from notable schools, including the University of Miami, the University of Florida and Florida State University, before enrolling at the University of Notre Dame.

Nix did not see game time during his freshman year in 2010, but became a starter in the 2011 season, appearing in all 13 games and starting 11 of them. Throughout the year, he recorded a total of 45 tackles and one pass breakup and registered nine different games with at least two tackles.

In 2012, Nix again started 11 games and improved his stats, contributing 50 tackles, five pass breakups and two sacks. His totals for tackles and pass breakups were the best amongst Notre Dame's defensive linemen that year. Notre Dame went into the BCS National Championship Game undefeated, as the number one ranked team, but eventually lost to the Alabama Crimson Tide. Nevertheless, Nix was able to record five tackles during the game, including two tackles for a loss.

The 2013 season marked his final year at Notre Dame and although he was hindered by a knee injury, which forced him to miss several games towards the end of the year, he was able to finish the season with 27 tackles. Nix then decided to forgo the remainder of his college eligibility in order to enter the NFL Draft.

During the 2014 NFL Draft, Nix was picked by the Houston Texans in the third round, as the 83rd overall selection. He was subsequently signed to a contract with the franchise, worth a total of $2.85 million.
