Bio

Luka Modrić was born in Zadar, SFR Yugoslavia on 9 September 1985. A versatile playmaker, who is able to play centrally or on the wing, he can operate as an attacking midfielder, or in a more defensive midfield role. Known for his vision, creativity and technique, he is considered by many observers to be one of the best Croatian footballers of all time.

Having started his career in Zadar's youth academy, Modrić was signed by Dinamo Zagreb in 2002 and graduated to their senior team the following year. He was sent out on loan to Zrinjski Mostar for the 2003–04 season and Inter Zaprešić for the 2004-05 season, before returning to Dinamo Zagreb. Modrić made his breakthrough into the first team in 2005–06 and helped the team to win three consecutive league titles, being named Croatian First League Player of the Year and Croatian Footballer of the Year for 2007. In the summer of 2008, he completed a move to England, where he joined Tottenham.

During his time in the Premier League, Modrić rose to greater international attention and became a key member of the Spurs side which competed in the UEFA Champions League during Harry Redknapp's time in charge. His performances during the 2010-11 season resulted in him being named as the Tottenham Hotspur Player of the Year. He was strongly linked with a move to Chelsea before the 2011-12 season, but Spurs ultimately refused to sell and he stayed for one more season, before moving to Real Madrid in the summer of 2012. His first season in Madrid was difficult and he initially struggled to find form and a starting place ahead of the likes of Xabi Alonso and Mesut Özil. However, manager Carlo Ancelotti began to utilise him as a key player during the 2013-14 campaign.

Modrić made his debut for Croatia's national team in 2006. His performances at Euro 2008 saw him named in the Team of the Tournament.
