Bio

Mario Barwuah Balotelli was born in Palermo, Italy on 12 August 1990. A striker who is known for his strength, technical ability and powerful shots, he is also a specialist penalty taker, widely considered as one of the best penalty takers in world football. Over the years, Balotelli has been something of a controversial figure, with his off-the-field behaviour often making headlines.

Balotelli began his youth career with Lumezzane and went on to make two appearances for the senior team. After failing to impress during a trial with FC Barcelona as a 15 year old, Balotelli joined Inter in 2006 and made his Serie A debut in 2007. In early 2008, he attracted national attention when he scored two goals against Juventus in a Coppa Italia fixture. Over the next few seasons, Balotelli contributed towards consecutive Serie A titles in 2007–08, 2008–09 and 2009–10, as well as Coppa Italia and UEFA Champions League wins in the 2009-10 campaign. However, behavioural problems led to issues with the club's manager, José Mourinho, as well as with supporters.

In the summer of 2010, Balotelli completed a €21.8 million move to Manchester City and almost immediately became the focus of tabloid stories due to his antics away from football. However, on the field he produced several notable performances and picked up the 2010 Golden Boy award. During his time with the club, he contributed towards an FA Cup win in 2010–11, being named Man of the Match for the final, and a Premier League win in 2011-12. Yet, his disciplinary problems continued and in January 2013, he joined AC Milan. Upon returning to Italy, he quickly became an important first team player and found fine goalscoring form.

Balotelli has played for the senior Italy national team since 2010. He was a major part of the squad which finished as runners up at Euro 2012 and was eventually included in the competition's Team of the Tournament.
