Bio

Matt Barkley is entering his second season with the Philadelphia Eagles. Barkley spent his 2013 season as the third-string quarterback behind Nick Foles and Michael Vick. The rookie quarterback saw action in three games, looking very shaky in all three appearances, going a combined 30-of-49 for 300 yards, with no touchdowns and four interceptions.

Early Years & College

Barkley was born in Newport Beach, Calif. on Sept. 8, 1990. Barkley attended Mater Dei High where he finished as the school’s all-time leader in passing yardage. In 2007, he was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year and ranked No.1 among high school prospects in the country by many recruiting websites. He committed to the University of Southern California (USC) before his senior season. Barkley threw for 116 touchdowns in his USC career and finished as the Pac-12 Conference and USC all-time record holder with 12,327 passing yards. Barkley was the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy in 2012, but a separated shoulder plummeted his draft stock.

Philadelphia Eagles

Barkley was selected in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL draft (98th overall) following an injury-plagued final season at USC. Training camp began with an open competition for the starting quarterback job, between Foles and Vick, but Barkley inserted himself into the competition with a well-timed sound bite. However, a poor camp and preseason sealed his fate as third on the depth chart. Barkley saw action in three games, throwing three interceptions (Oct. 20) in his NFL debut against Dallas, then chucked another when forced into action against the Giants (Oct 27). His best game came in mop-up duty against Oakland (Nov. 3), when he went 2-of-3 for 13 yards. Barkley is battling Sanchez for the backup job in 2014.
