Williams attended Waconia High School in Minnesota. He was one of the top recruits in the state as Rivals.com ranked him as the seventh-best recruit in Minnesota. Scout.com ranked Williams as one of the top 50 tight ends in the nation. Williams excelled at punter and quarterback during his time as a prep athlete.
In 2011 he passed for 784 yards and eight scores. He also tallied 902 yards on the ground and 13 rushing touchdowns. A star on both sides of the ball, Williams tallied 80 tackles and two picks on defense.
Williams redshirted at Minnesota in 2012 but burst onto the collegiate scene in a big way in 2013. Williams’ first career catch was a 10-yard touchdown grab against UNLV. He led the Gophers in receiving yards in 2013 with 417 while finishing tied for first on the squad in catches with 25 and touchdowns through the air with five. His 453 all-purpose yards were third on the Gophers. Athlon declared Williams a third team Freshman All-American and he was an Academic All-Big Ten selection as well. In Minnesota’s bowl game against Syracuse Williams finished with five receptions for 76 yards and one score.
