Memphis: Not Graceland but Manchester United
The glaring absence of Robin Van Persie over the past weeks (due to injury, exhaustion, act of Van Gaal) has led many to speculate about possible replacements. The unsteady performance of Manchester United has pushed many to pray for the arrival of reinforcements.
All waiting may be over soon.
An answer may be arriving from across the North Sea. "Secret" meetings and negotiations have been reported along with late night chartered jet flights; the sort of business usually reserved for Camp David.
Decision makers for Manchester United and Louis Van Gaal seem set on bringing in another forward from the Netherlands, Memphis Depay.
At the age of 21, Depay has impressed Van Gaal during World Cup play. His play at PSV has been solid and showing steady improvement with 20 goals in 27 starts. Taking his age into consideration, he would be a viable candidate to benefit from some tutelage under Wayne Rooney and then set out on attempting to demolish the Premier League.
The price tag of 25million pounds seems about reasonable for a player of Depay's caliber. PSV has not commented on his inevitable release, only fueling the speculation.
This deal seems to be the start of the Van Gaal era proper. Having survived his first season in the BPL with very conservative and accurate predictions about Manchester United’s performance, Van Gaal is setting out to put his mark on United by sticking to an idea about how he wants the game to be played, and with the players of his choosing.
