Bio

Michael Bennett plays defensive end/defensive tackle for the Seattle Seahawks. He previously played four seasons for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and played collegiately at Texas A&M University.

Early Years

Bennett was born on November 13, 1985 in Avondale, LA. His family relocated to Texas and he attended Alief Taylor High School in Houston, TX. At Alief Taylor High, he earned honorable mention All-District honors as a junior. He made great strides the following season, making 110 tackles and 4.0 quarterback sacks while receiving All-District first team honors. After graduation, he chose to continue playing football at Texas A&M University.

Texas A&M University

As a true freshman in 2005, Bennett saw immediate action and played in all 11 games for the Aggies. In 2006, he recorded 27 tackles and 2.0 sacks as a reserve defensive end. He continued to see action as a reserve in 2007 as a junior, earning honorable mention All-Big 12 honors after registering 43 tackles and six tackles for loss. He finally earned a full-time starting role as a senior, making 42 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and 2.0 sacks.

Seattle Seahawks (2009)

Bennett participated in the 2009 NFL Scouting Combine, but went undrafted and signed with the Seattle Seahawks as a free agent on April 27, 2009. After a strong preseason, he made Seattle’s final roster as a defensive end, but he was waived on October 10, 2009 to make room for an offensive tackle.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Only two days after being waived by the Seahawks, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers claimed Bennett and moved him to defensive tackle to replace the injured Gerald McCoy. He saw limited action during his first three seasons with the Buccaneers, but he had a breakout campaign in 2012, recording a career-best 41 tackles and 9.0 sacks.

Seattle Seahawks (2013-Present)

Bennett emerged as one of the most coveted defensive linemen on the free agent market prior to the 2013 season. Tampa Bay chose not to re-sign him, and he returned to the Seahawks with a one-year deal worth $4.8 million. He appeared in all 16 games for the eventual Super Bowl champs and led the team with 8.5 sacks while pitching in 31 tackles and returning a fumble for a touchdown against the New Orleans Saints. On March 10, 2014, he agreed to stay in Seattle with a four-year, $28.5 million contract.
