Griffin was born on January 4, 1985 in Austin, Texas. He was a starter at running back and defensive while at Bowie High School. As a senior, Griffin had 1,181 yards and 11 on the ground and added 46 tackles defensively. He was named as an honorable mention All-State Class 5A for his efforts offensively.

As a junior at Texas, Griffin started 13 games at strong safety. That year, he recorded 100 tackles (seventh in the Big-12) and two interceptions. In the 2005 Rose Bowl for the National Championship, Griffin intercepted a pass on the goal line to help Texas win 41-38 over the University of Southern California.
As a senior, Griffin had 88 tackles and a career-high four interceptions. He also had four forced fumbles, a sack, and 12 pass deflections.
Griffin was drafted with the 19th pick in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Titans.
He started his rookie season at cornerback due to the season-long suspension of Adam “Pacman” Jones, but was eventually moved back to safety to finish the season. He finished his rookie season with three interceptions and 54 tackles.
Griffin was named to his first Pro-Bowl in 2008 when he was second in the NFL with seven interceptions, one of which he returned for a score. He added 75 tackles, one sacks, and 11 pass deflections that season.
Griffin would return to the Pro-Bowl in 2010 after finishing the season with a career-high 108 tackles and four interceptions.
