Johnson was born on February 7, 1987 in Selma, Alabama. At Dallas County High School in Plantersville, Alabama, Johnson played tight end and defensive end. As a senior, Johnson caught 42 passes for 650 yards and six TDs while recording 92 tackles and 14 sacks defensively.
While he did accumulate 10 sacks in his first three seasons at Georgia Tech, Johnson had a breakout season in 2008 as a senior. In 13 games, Johnson had 46 tackles and was third in the ACC with 18 tackles for loss. He was also third in the ACC with nine sacks on the season. He was named first team All-ACC.
Even though he was projected to go in the first-round, Johnson fell to the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft and was drafted by the Bengals.
In his first three seasons, Johnson started only 15 games and recorded 11.5 sacks. It was his fourth season in 2012 that Johnson showed his potential. In 15 starts, Johnson had 11.5 sacks, the ninth most in the NFL. He added one interception and one fumble recovery with 52 tackles.
Johnson had a down year in 2013 and only had 3.5 sacks, but he did have a career-high 10 pass deflections.
