Mitch Leidner is a quarterback for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers of the Big Ten Conference. He enters 2014 as the likely starter after seeing action in 10 games and starting four in 2013.
Leidner attended Lakeville South High School in Minnesota. He was named to the All-Metro team and the All-Conference team as a senior as Leidner threw for 1,872 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also played basketball where he was an Honorable Mention All-Conference pick as a junior.
Leidner redshirted in 2012 for the Golden Gophers. In 2013 he tied David Cobb for the most rushing touchdowns on the team with seven. He threw for 619 yards and rushed for 407 yards on the season for an average of four yards per carry. His collegiate debut came against UNLV where Leidner ran three times for 25 yards and his first career touchdown.
Leidner made his first career start against San Jose State and rushed for 151 yards and four touchdowns. He became the first Minnesota player since 2003 to tally at least four touchdowns in one contest. Leidner’s first career touchdown pass came at the Big House as he found Maxx Williams for a seven-yard score. He threw for a season-high 205 yards against Syracuse in the Gopher’s bowl game and also tallied a season-high two touchdown passes. Leidner was named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team
