MLS Week 4 Predictions
Growing up I lived and breathed the NFL. Eventually picking winners became more than a science, it became an instinct. These instincts have not transferred to soccer, where my record has slumped to a lowly 5-14. While soccer is more unpredictable than the NFL, the season is still young and I still have time. So here are my week 4 picks that are open for skepticism.
March 29th Fixtures
Philadelphia Union – Montreal Impact
A battle of two teams I can't get a read on. These two teams have not been up to full form and are very unpredictable. Montreal showed life at beginning of the season in a 3-2 loss to FC Dallas. Since that match, the Impact have failed to score a goal in back to back matches against Houston Dynamo and Seattle Sounders. Union on the other hand has scored exactly one goal in every match this season. I don't see this trend changing.
My Pick: Philadelphia Union 1-0
DC United – Chicago Fire
Two underwhelming clubs face off in an attempt to pull out of an early season funk. DC United has yet to score a goal this year. Poor finishing and struggles in the midfield have contributed to lackluster performances. Chicago has been scatter shot early this season and a series of drawn matches still has the Fire in good position on the eastern conference table. Striker Mike Magee is back, but questions still remain.
My Pick: Chicago Fire 1-0
Colorado Rapids – Sporting KC
Colorado has shown promise since the first match against the New York Red Bulls. After shutting out Portland Timbers 2-0, the Rapids are poised to face their toughest competition against a refreshed Sporting KC. Sporting is in a better position, but still needs more productivity from their forwards in order to secure wins.
My Pick: Draw 1-1
Vancouver Whitecaps FC – Houston Dynamo
Will Bruin and the Dynamo are back in action after their bye week against a slumping Vancouver squad. Bruin looks to keep Houston undefeated in addition to adding to his three goals on the year. Vancouver Whitecaps started out by making a statement, blasting the Red Bulls 4-1. The Whitecaps began to unravel and fell apart to a scoreless draw against the New England Revolution.
My Pick: Houston Dynamo 2-1
FC Dallas – Portland Timbers
Dallas has been on fire this season and have surprised a few analyst including myself. Fabian Castillo has been a bright spot and will have his work cut out for him against the Timbers. Portland has been shaky this season and are still waiting for their front line to get in synch. While the Timbers are far from being in a poor run of form, they are not quite up to par yet.
My Pick: FC Dallas 2-1
Real Salt Lake – Toronto FC
This matchup has me guessing. Both squads are two of the best and Toronto has been on fire thanks to Jermain Defoe. Defoe has a hat trick this season and looks to keep Toronto undefeated. Real Salt Lake has been suffering through injuries and will need midfielder Kyle Beckerman to step up and contain Defoe and the Toronto attackers.
My Pick: Draw 2-2
Seattle Sounders – Columbus Crew
Columbus Crew place their undefeated season on the line against the Sounders at Seattle. In what has been dubbed “The Marshall Bowl” where Sounders defender Chad Marshall faces his old team, two teams with dynamic offenses and tight defenses square off. The Crew catch a break with Sounders midfielder Clint Dempsey finishing out his suspension. Both squads have solid teams and could end up in a high end shoot out.
My Pick: Draw 2-2
San Jose Earthquakes – New England Revolution
New England looks to rebound from their horrific run of form against a dangerous San Jose squad. Revolution keeper Bobby Shuttleworth will have his hands full from Earthquakes strikers Chris Wondolowski and Steven Lenhart. New England is looking for their first goal from a very disorganized midfield and strikers who aren't prone to finishing.
My Pick: San Jose Earthquakes 1-0
March 30th fixture
New York Red Bulls – Chivas USA
This is an interesting matchup between two squads that have surprised for different reasons. New York has been unusually flat to start the season. The lack of offense has been a major point of concern for the squad and may find problems against a tough Chivas team. Chivas brings a level of unpredictability which makes this match hard to predict.
My Pick: Draw 1-1
