Montanier leaves Sociedad for Rennes
Real Sociedad manager Philippe Montanier is to leave the Spanish outfit for French side Rennes, the two clubs have confirmed.
Montanier has guided the Anoeta Stadium side to the cusp of UEFA Champions League football and is now set to try to replicate that performance with the Coupe de la Ligue finalists.
Rennes have struggled since the turn of the year and announced they would part company with boss Frederic Antonetti at the end of the season following a slump that has seen them win just three games in 2013 and fall to 11th in the table.
The cup final defeat to Saint-Etienne preceded the announcement of Antonetti's departure and the Brittany club will be hoping Montanier can improve the team's fortunes.
A statement on their official website read: "Philippe Montanier, 48 years and current trainer of the Real Sociedad, accompanied of his assistant Michel Troin, will succeed Frederic Antonetti to the post of trainer of the professional team of the Stadium Rennais F.C. They will join the professional group on Monday July 1."
Basque team Sociedad sit fourth in La Liga, ahead of Valencia on goal difference with two games to go, and will likely need to overcome Real Madrid and Deportivo La Coruna to ensure their place in Europe's top club competition.
However, should they wrap up UEFA Champions League qualification, they will have to approach it without Montanier, but the club are refusing to be drawn on any potential successor until the campaign has finished.
"The first-team coach Philippe Montanier has informed Real Sociedad of his decision to reject the offer of a contract extension," a Sociedad statement read.
"Therefore he will leave the club at the end of the 2012-13 season when his contract end.
"Real Sociedad will make an announcement on this issue (of a new manager) after the two remaining games."
