MWC Power Dozen: UNLV Rebels On The Rise

Created on Oct. 17, 2013 9:55 PM EST

Ranking the Mountain West Conference 1-12 through seven weeks of action:

1. Fresno State (5-0, 2-0 MWC)

Last Week: Bye

This Week: vs. UNLV, 7 p.m. PT

Quick Take: In a season where seven Mountain West teams have had two or more different starting quarterbacks, David Carr and the Bulldogs are humming along with the FBS’ fifth-ranked scoring offense at 47.5 points per game.

2. Boise State (4-2, 2-1)

Last Week: Won at Utah State, 34-23

This Week: vs. Nevada, 6 p.m. MT

Quick Take: With win in Logan, Broncos now have won an eye-popping 49 straight games in the month of October.

3. Wyoming (4-2, 2-0)

Last Week: Beat visiting New Mexico, 38-31

This Week: vs. Colorado State, noon MT

Quick Take: Cowboys look to retain the Bronze Boot and win five straight in the border series for the first time since the early 1970s.

4. Utah State (3-4, 2-1)

Last Week: Lost to visiting Boise State, 34-23

This Week: at New Mexico, 7 p.m. MT

Quick Take: The Aggies and their new starting QB, freshman Darell Garretson, will try to shake off back-to-back losses and regroup in Albuquerque.

5. San Jose State (3-3, 2-1)

Last Week: Won at Colorado State, 34-27

    This Week: Bye

Quick Take: Be warned, MWC foes: SJSU QB David Fales is heating up in a hurry with 749 passing yards and six TDs during the Spartans’ last two games.

6. San Diego State (3-3, 2-0)

Last Week: Won at Air Force, 27-20

    This Week: Bye

Quick Take: The Aztecs have to hope a bye week won’t steal their momentum coming off three straight wins, including a 21-0 fourth-quarter rally to stun Air Force.

7. Nevada (3-3, 2-1)

Last Week: Bye

This Week: at Boise State, 6 p.m. MT

Quick Take: Wolf Pack are 3-0 at home, 0-3 on the road, and the bad news is this week’s game is in Boise, where Nevada has dropped six straight going back to 1997.

8. UNLV (4-2, 2-0)

Last Week: Outlasted visiting Hawaii, 39-37

This Week: at Fresno State, 7 p.m. PT

Quick Take: The Rebels have won four straight for the first time since 2000, but you could say the challenge gets markedly tougher this week on the road against the unbeaten Bulldogs.

9. Colorado State (2-4, 0-1)

Last Week: Lost to visiting San Jose State, 34-27

This Week: at Wyoming, noon MT

Quick Take: The Rams came up a touchdown short in their “statement” game last week against Fales and San Jose State and now must deal with another formidable QB in Wyoming's Brett Smith.

10. New Mexico (2-4, 0-2)

Last Week: Lost at Wyoming, 38-31

This Week: vs. Utah State, 7 p.m. MT

Quick Take: The Lobos may need to go to No. 3 QB David Vega with Cole Gautsche (knee) and Clayton Mitchem (concussion) suffering injuries in the last two games.

11. Air Force (1-6, 0-5)

Last Week: Lost to visiting San Diego State, 27-20

    This Week: Bye

Quick Take: The Falcons saw a 20-6 home lead disappear in the final 12 minutes against SDSU and now limp into a bye week with six straight defeats.

12. Hawaii (0-5, 0-3)

Last Week: Lost at UNLV, 39-37

    This Week: Bye

Quick Take: The Rainbow Warriors have been in most of their games, but it would help if they could settle on a starting QB and stick with him.
