Suh was born in Portland Oregon on January 6, 1987. He attended Grant High School in Portland and played on both offense and defense as a lineman. He earned honorable mentions in both positions. In 2004 he was named Portland Interscholastic League Defensive Player of the Year. In his senior year he committed to chasing quarterbacks and was recognized with All-American honors.
Suh committed to the Nebraska Cornhuskers in 2005. He had a season-ending knee injury very early in his freshman year and was a medical redshirt. Suh returned and showed flashes of the player he could become when healthy.
As a junior Suh made 16 tackles that resulted in loss of yardage to go along with 7.5 sacks and two interceptions as a defensive lineman. In his senior season at Nebraska, he received several awards, honors and was fourth in the Heisman voting in 2009 with 815 points. Despite not winning the Heisman Trophy, Suh was recognized as Big-12 Defensive Player of the Year and AP Player of the Year.
The Detroit Lions drafted Suh as the second overall pick in the 2010 draft. Making an immediate impact he started all 16 games as a rookie and recorded 10 sacks. Suh has been accused of being a dirty player with questionable acts of unnecessary roughness. However, he insists his style of play is rugged and a much needed attitude adjustment to the Lions recent football culture.
