Bio

Nemanja Vidić was born in Titovo Užice, SFR Yugoslavia on 21 October 1981. A no nonsense central defender, he is known for his bravery, tough tackling, aggression and leadership skills and is generally regarded as one of the finest defenders of his generation. In both 2008–09 and 2010–11, he was named in the FIFA FIFPro World XI.

Vidić began his professional career with Red Star Belgrade, who he joined as a youth team player in 1996. After reaching the senior team, he spent a season on loan at Spartak Subotica, before returning to Red Star and establishing himself in the side. In 2001-02, Vidić helped the team to win the Yugoslav Cup, while in 2003-04 they won the First League of Serbia and Montenegro and the Serbia and Montenegro Cup. In the summer of 2004, he moved to Spartak Moscow, where he spent two seasons. Although the transfer fee was undiscosed, it was reported to be the highest fee ever paid by a Russian Premier League team for a defender.

In January 2006, Vidić completed a move to Manchester United and quickly emerged as a fan favourite after building a solid defensive partnership with Rio Ferdinand. Over the following seasons, he experienced major success, winning the 2007-08 UEFA Champions League, as well as Premier League titles in 2006–07, 2007–08 and 2008–09. In 2008, he was named as the Serbian Footballer of the Year, while at the end of the 2008-09 campaign, he was voted the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year and the Manchester United Players' Player of the Year. In 2010, he was awarded the captain's armband and led the side to additional Premier League titles in 2010–11 and 2012–13. However, in March 2014, he signed a pre-contract agreement with Inter Milan, allowing him to join them ahead of the 2014-15 season.

At youth team level, Vidić represented Yugoslavia, before playing for Serbia and Montenegro at senior level. During qualifying for the 2006 World Cup, Vidić contributed towards the team conceding just one goal and the defensive unit became known as the 'Famous Four'. However, he missed the World Cup itself through injury. After playing in the 2010 World Cup for independent Serbia, Vidić announced his retirement from international football in 2011.
