New England Patriots Sign WR Austin Collie
ESPN Boston’s Field Yates first reported Thursday that the New England Patriots signed veteran WR Austin Collie. Terms of the contract were not announced.
The oft-injured receiver joins an already banged up receiving corps in New England. With several pass-catchers listed on the team’s injury report Wednesday, they most likely made the move as nothing more than a precaution.
With Danny Amendola (supposedly) eyeing a return this week, and Julian Edelman also in the mix, don’t expect much from Collie. If Kenbrell Thompkins is also able to play, which seems likely, then don’t expect anything at all. There would just be too many mouths to feed if all three are healthy and on the field.
Collie, who missed seven games in 2010 and all but one in 2012, has dealt with concussions throughout his career and also suffered a ruptured patellar tendon last season. He had a brief stint with the 49ers during training camp but was cut prior to the start of the season. His health was apparently a factor in his being released.
