New York Jets Re-Sign OT Jason Smith
The New York Jets signed OT Jason Smith, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post.
Smith played last season with the Jets after playing his first three seasons with the St. Louis Rams. He was traded to the Jets last August for offensive tackle, Wayne Hunter.
Smith, the No. 2 pick in the 2009 draft, was owed a large roster bonus after last season and was subsequently waived after the season as a cost cutting measure. A relative bust when considering his high draft position in '09, Smith was waived earlier this week by the New Orleans Saints.
Smith fell behind on the Saints depth chart, so it’s safe to consider Jets are looking to use Smith as a backup, similar to how they did last season. Costello reported yesterday via twitter that the Jets had regained interest in Smith following him being cut by the Saints. In turn, the Jets waived center Scott Wedige to make room for Smith on the roster.
