Antonio Smith has been officially suspended by the NFL for the rest of the preseason and the first regular season game of the 2013 season. The suspension stems from an incident in which he took the helmet off of Miami Dolphins LG Richie Incognito and used it to hit him in the face.
He’ll be missing the team’s dress rehearsal against New Orleans this Sunday and a matchup he won’t participate in anyway against the Dallas Cowboys the following week. As for the regular season, he’ll be missing the team’s opener against the San Diego Chargers in Week 1. With the state of San Diego’s offense, his absence probably won’t have a noticeable impact on the team.
The NFL’s suspension is laughable at best. The two preseason games are inconsequential to the nine-year veteran, and he certainly deserves more for his malicious actions.
Smith has a total of seven violations since 2011, and his actions certainly warrant extra scrutiny and a harsher penalty by the league.
