Newcastle's challenge to replace long-departed Senegalese striker Demba Ba has spawned conflicting reports this week.
The Daily Mail have reported Alan Pardew is lining up a 12-million-pound attempt for yet another France native, Andre-Pierre Gignac, from Marseille.
However, The Guardian believe Vitesse attacker Wilfried Bony is the man for Pardew's Magpies, claiming the Ivorian is leading the list of candidates to join Papiss Cisse up front in Newcastle's XI.
However, the Daily Mail reported Gignac has taken over in the race to St James' Park, after recently appointed football director Joe Kinnear was said to admit no bid for Bony was in place and interest had ceased.
Bony, instead, is thought to be linked with Swansea City, after the Welsh club failed to sew up the services of Lyon forward Bafetimbi Gomis.
