- Pats star receiver suffered ACL rip in preseason game
- Edelman just signed new contract
- Tom Brady will have to look for new options in 2017
New England just got the worst possible pre-season news – star receiver Julian Edelman is out for the rest of the season!
An MRI revealed that Edelman suffered an ACL tear in his right knee during Friday’s preseason win over the Lions. The Patriots have confirmed the 32-year-old will miss the entire 2017 season.
“Great competitor, works hard, tough, does all the things that you ask him to do,” coach Bill Belichick said about Edelman on a conference call Saturday, via Ben Volin of the Boston Globe. “I feel badly for him of course.”
Edelman went down on a non-contact play on his third catch of the opening drive, and had to leave the field.
Edelman has been Tom Brady’s most reliable target for years. He has earned more than nine targets per game over the last four seasons and has averaged more than 11 yards per catch the past five years.
He is coming off a career-high 1,106-yard 2016 season and signed a new two-year deal at the start of the season.
