Preview: Flash vs. Reign FC
(July 1, 2014) – Carli Lloyd and the Western New York Flash look to solidify their playoff hopes when they host league-leading Seattle Reign FC on Wednesday night.
Lloyd powered the Flash to a 2-1 victory over the Boston Breakers in Week 12 with two second-half goals to lead Western New York to their second win in the last three games.
The U.S. international rose above her defender in the box in the 59th minute against Boston to give the Flash a 1-0 lead with a header directed just inside the far post.
After the Breakers leveled the score 12 minutes later, Lloyd provided the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute when she streaked onto a pass from midfielder Vicky Losada before lofting the ball into the roof of the net.
The goals were Delran, N.J. native’s fifth and sixth of the season and moved her into a tie for fifth in the league. Losada’s assist on the game-winning tally was her league-best sixth of the season.
Goalkeeper and Australia international Lydia Williams made three saves to earn the win for the Flash.
Lloyd and the Flash take the momentum from the victory into their contest Wednesday with the Reign.
This is the third and final match between the teams this season, with Seattle boasting a 1-1-0 record against Western New York in the two previous meetings.
The Flash came the closest of any team to handing a loss to the Reign this year – taking a 2-1 lead into second-half stoppage time May 25 before forward Kim Little to rescue a 2-2 draw for Seattle.
Little and the Reign saw their four-game winning streak snapped with a 0-0 draw against Sky Blue FC in Week 12.
The draw was just the third time this season that Seattle were forced to settle for a share of the points – and the first time all year that the Reign were held scoreless.
Backup goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer made five saves to record her second shutout of the year for Seattle, who play three of their next four games at home.
