Pro Bowl Receiver Likely Out For The Season
Not only did the Atlanta Falcons lose another close game and fall to 1-4 on the season, but they also lost one of their primary offensive weapons for the remainder of the year.
WR Julio Jones, the second leading receiver in the NFL, limped off the field Monday night with a foot injury. D. Orlando Ledbetter of AJC.com tweeted, "#Falcons WR Julio Jones to be out for season with a foot injury, according to team. Coach Smith will address at 2:30 pm [today]". The live press conference clip can be found on the Falcons website.
If the reports are indeed true, the offense is in more serious trouble than ever. The offensive line is already dealing with inconsistent play and injuries while RB Steven Jackson is still recovering from an ankle injury. WR Roddy White has been hurt as well, and dependable backup RB Jason Snelling got hurt during the Monday night game along with Jones. With this latest blow the team, the Falcons will have to look elsewhere to find a top-tier wide reciever to help out TE Tony Gonzalez. Luckily, there are still plenty of free agent recievers to choose from at this point. Atlanta can try to lure Brandon Lloyd out of retirement or the team can check out other options such as Braylon Edwards, Josh Cribbs or Devery Henderson. This injury also means that wideouts Harry Douglas and Kevin Cone (who's been in the league for two years) will have to step up in the absence of Jones and White.
In the meantime, pray that Jones' injury is not as serious as reported or if he is indeed out for the season, hope that he will come back stronger than ever and reclaim his spot as one of the rising stars in the league.
