Rashad Jennings is entering his first season with the New York Giants after spending three years with the Jacksonville Jaguars, intertwined with one season in Oakland. Jennings, a backup running back for the majority of his NFL career, is expected to compete for the starting job in New York in 2014. On March 12, 2014, he signed a four-year deal worth $14 million.
Early Years & College
Jennings was born in Forest, Va., on March 26, 1985. He attended Liberty Christian Academy where he was a two-year starter at linebacker and tailback, rushing for a combined 3,287 yards and 56 touchdowns. After graduating, Jennings went to Pittsburgh and started as a true freshman, only to transfer to Division I-AA Liberty a few months later for family reasons. Jennings, a big physical back that can run in between the tackles, set Big South Conference records by gaining 3,633 yards and 42 touchdowns.
The Jaguars selected Jennings in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL draft (250th overall). Jennings saw action immediately, playing in 15 games and picking up 202 yards in his rookie season, despite being buried behind Maurice Jones-Drew on the depth chart. In parts of four seasons, Jennings rushed for 944 yards and seven touchdowns for the Jaguars.
Oakland Raiders/New York Giants
The Raiders signed Jennings and put him in a familiar role, serving as a backup, this time to starting running back Darren McFadden. But McFadden struggled through a myriad of injuries in 2013, and Jennings wound up starting eight games and gaining 733 yards, including a 150-yard performance in Week 11. The Giants inked Jennings to a mulit-year deal and he’ll compete against David Wilson for the starting job in 2014.
