With the addition of Ahmad Bradshaw through free agency, Carter’s roster spot was clearly in jeopardy. He had fallen behind Vick Ballard and Donald Brown for backup duties on the depth chart.
Carter probably won’t find much playing time in Baltimore either. With Ray Rice entrenched as the starter and Bernard Pierce getting his fair share of carries to back him up, he was probably just added for insurance and depth. Pierce did suffer a minor sprain in his knee during their preseason opener, so perhaps the trade was a reaction to that.
Reed, on the other hand, will probably find more playing time on the field with the Colts. While it probably won’t come at the receiver position, he should be a valuable contributor as a punt and kick returner.
