About Real Madrid

Real Madrid Club de Fútbol was founded in 1902 as Madrid Football Club. The team's name changed to Real Madrid, which translates to Royal Madrid, after King Alfonso XIII bestowed the title upon them in 1920. At present, Real Madrid are the richest club in world football, based on annual income. They have won La Liga a record 32 times, the Champions League/European Cup a record 9 times and were named as the most successful club side of the 20th century by FIFA.

Under the Presidency of Santiago Bernabéu Yeste, between 1945 and his death in 1978, the club began to employ a transfer strategy based around signing big name players from abroad. This policy soon saw players like Alfredo Di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás join Real Madrid and lead the club to both domestic and continental success. During the Bernabéu era, the club won La Liga on 16 occasions, the Copa Del Rey on six occasions and the European Cup six times as well, including the first five European Cups to ever be contested.

At the turn of the century, Florentino Pérez became the club's President, ushering in the era of Los Galácticos. Pérez aimed to sign at least one superstar player, or 'Galáctico', each summer, including names like Luís Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and David Beckham. Under Pérez's Presidency, the club won the UEFA Champions League 2001-02 and two La Liga titles in 2000–01 and 2002–03. Florentino Pérez resigned in 2006 but returned in 2009, continuing his Galácticos policy by signing Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, as well as bringing Jose Mourinho to the club.

The list of legendary former Real Madrid players is almost endless and includes such names as Alfredo Di Stéfano, Ferenc Puskás, Hugo Sánchez, Roberto Carlos, Fernando Hierro, Raul and Zinedine Zidane.

Since 1947, Real Madrid have played their home matches at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, formerly known as the Nuevo Estadio Chamartín. It currently has a capacity of 85,454 and is the primary stadium used by the Spanish national team. Their greatest rivals are FC Barcelona and the meeting between the two is know the world over as El Clasico.
