Nov 05, 2013 4:47 PM EST

North Carolina quarterback Bryn Renner is out of the season after injuring his left shoulder, multiple reports indicate.

Renner will undergo surgery Wednesday. He the shoulder on a third-quarter scramble against N.C. State on Saturday, but returned to the game.

The senior also missed a game due to a foot injury and generally did not meet expectations in his final season, though he holds Tar Heels records for career completion percentage (66.5) and single-season passing touchdowns (28) and is third in career passing yards (8,221).

Backup Marquise Williams, a sophomore, has completed 40-of-66 passes for 537 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. He also has rushed for 201 yards in limited action.

North Carolina finished 8-4 last season under new coach Larry Fedora, missing a bowl game due to NCAA sanctions. The Tar Heels (3-5) are unlikely to play in a bowl game this year, needing to win three of four with a backup quarterback (Virginia, at Pittsburgh, Old Dominion, Duke).
