Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been named in England's 25-man squad to face Scotland, despite struggling with a shoulder injury.

There is also a place for Southampton striker Rickie Lambert, who appears in the international squad for the first time.

Lambert scored 15 goals in 38 appearances in his first ever Premier League campaign last term.

Rooney has been struggling with the knock, suffered against Real Betis last week, which kept him out of the club's pre-season friendly against AIK in Stockholm.

The 27-year-old is unsettled at Old Trafford and continues to be linked with a move to Chelsea, although manager David Moyes remains adamant the player is not for sale.

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has also been included in Roy Hodgson's squad for the match at Wembley on August 14.

He has featured sparingly for the Emirates Stadium outfit during pre-season as he works his way back to fitness after a series of long-term injuries.

Rooney's United team-mate Wilfried Zaha is included in the squad and will look to earn his second cap.

He has featured prominently for the side in their warm-up matches after completing his move from Premier League new-boys Crystal Palace.

Captain Steven Gerrard remains in the squad as do experienced Chelsea duo Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole.

There is also a return for Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy, who missed a large chunk of last season with a thigh injury.

England will face rivals Scotland for the first time since November 1999 when the two sides met in the UEFA Euro 2000 qualifying play-offs.

Scotland were 1-0 victors at Wembley, but England progressed 2-1 on aggregate after a 2-0 victory at Hampden Park in the first leg.
