Ryan Clark is entering his first season, in his second tour of duty, with the Washington Redskins after signing as an unrestricted free agent on April 1, 2014. Clark, a veteran leader at the free safety position, spent his last eight seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, intertwined with two-year stints with the Redskins and New York Giants. Clark, 34, has accumulated 827 tackles and 15 interceptions in 12 NFL seasons.
Early Years & College
Clark was born in Marrero, La., on Oct. 13, 1979. He attended Archbishop Shaw High where he earned Class 5A All-State and District 10-5A Defensive MVP honors, while collecting 16 career interceptions. After graduating, Clark went to Louisiana State University, serving as a vital cog on special teams as a freshman. In 1999, he was the team’s leading tackler (110) and earned All-SEC honors in 2000.
New York Giants/Washington Redskins (1)
Clark was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Giants in 2002 and saw time mostly on special teams before being released on Oct. 21, 2002 and then re-signed to the practice squad two days later. Despite starting four games, the Giants waived him on May 27, 2004. He was claimed by the Redskins and played in 28 games, making 24 starts over two seasons, but Washington cut him to make room for free agent Adam Archuleta.
Clark was signed by the Steelers on March 14, 2006 and flashed great potential, starting 12 games and making 72 tackles. However, Clark had his spleen and gall bladder removed and missed 10 games due to complications from sickle cell anemia. Clark returned strong in 2008, recording 87 tackles in 14 starts, and won the Ed Block Courage Award, while helping lead the Steelers to a Super Bowl title. In eight seasons in Pittsburgh, Clark recorded 448 tackles and 12 interceptions.
Washington Redskins (2)
Clark signed a one-year contract with the Redskins on March 31, 2014. While it’s unclear how much he has left in the tank, the team is banking on him to provide savvy, veteran presence in the Redskins’ defensive secondary.
