Sammie Coates is a wide receiver for the Auburn Tigers of the Southeastern Conference. The SEC media, Phil Steele, Birmingham News, the Sporting News and Lindy's all named Coates to their 2014 pre-season All-SEC first teams. He is on the Maxwell Award and the Biletnikoff Award watch lists. Coates was also named one of the top 100 prospects in the nation to watch for the 2015 NFL Draft by NFLDraftScout.com.
Coates attended Leroy High School in Alabama. During his senior season, Coates caught 57 balls for 1,170 yards and 14 touchdowns. He led Leroy to the 2010 Alabama Class 2A state title. In the title game, he earned MVP honors after recording five catches for 60 yards and two touchdowns.
He also ran the ball six times for 27 yards and a touchdown. Coates showed he could do it all in the title game, punting twice for 63 yards and returning a punt for five yards. All the recruiting rankings listed Coates as one of the top players in Alabama and one of the top 100 receivers in the nation.
Coates did not play during his freshman year at Auburn in 2011 due to a pre-season injury. In 2012 he made his way into the wide receiver location, making his collegiate debut against Clemson.
But it was the 2013 season that saw Coates emerge as one of the premiere big play threats in the country. He averaged 21.5 yards per reception, third in the nation. He started 12 games and made 14 catches of 30 or more yards. One of his best performances was the LSU game as Coates caught four balls for 139 yards. He recorded two catches in the Iron Bowl win over Alabama, one of which was the 39-yard TD reception that tied the game with 32 seconds remaining.
