The San Diego Chargers have the 25th pick in the first round of the upcoming NFL Draft, and their biggest need is upgrading the cornerback position.
General manager Tom Telesco has a difficult decision to make -- whether to select an elite corner with the Bolts’ first pick or roll the dice by drafting for value at another position and hope one of the top pass defenders will still be available in the second round. The Chargers will not go wrong by choosing one of the top three cornerbacks (Darqueze Dennard, Jason Verrett or Kyle Fuller) in this upcoming draft, but they could improve their run defense by selecting a dominant nose tackle in the first round.
Here are the Chargers’ top five first-round draft pick candidates:
1. Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State. No question cornerback Darqueze Dennard is one of the top talents available in this year’s NFL Draft, and he has the skill level to be one of the next big stars in the league. Dennard has the speed and quickness to stay with a receiver, while having the toughness to stand up wideouts at the line of scrimmage. The Chargers desperately need this type of game-changer on defense, especially if they are going to compete with the pass-happy Denver Broncos for an AFC West title.
