Bio

Shilique Calhoun was born in Middletown Township, New Jersey on March 2, 1992. A defensive end for the Michigan State Spartans, he was named as the Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year for 2013, after a breakthrough year.

In his youth, Calhoun attended his hometown's Middletown High School North, where he played at both defensive end and tight end and generated a reputation as one of the nation's top defensive prospects. In his junior year, he was credited with 30 tackles and five tackles for a loss, while as a senior, he recorded 45 tackles, 15 tackles for a loss, five pass breakups and four sacks. Named to the All-Division team by coaches at the end of 2010, he was successfully recruited by Michigan State University.

Calhoun was unable to secure playing time as a true freshman in 2011 and was redshirted. He went on to make his debut for the Spartans in the 2012 season opener and although he served as backup, he appeared in all 13 games over the course of the year. Altogether, he registered six tackles, including four solo efforts, and was the joint team leader with five quarterback hurries.

As a sophomore, Calhoun became a starter at defensive end and went on to play in 14 games for the team, enjoying a breakout season. Throughout the year, he was able to register 37 tackles, 20 solo tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks and one interception. He contributed a career-high number of tackles in the game against Minnesota, with seven tackles. Additionally, in an excellent performance against Michigan, he managed career-best totals for tackles for a loss, with three, and sacks, with 2.5.

Following his successful season, Calhoun received numerous end-of-season honors. He was named as both the Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year and the National Defensive Performer of the Year, while the league's coaches and the media named him as a first team All-Big Ten selection. Moreover, he received second team All-American honors from multiple sources, including the Associated Press and USA Today and was a first team All-Sophomore selection by College Football News.
