A third-year linebacker, Steve Edmond has played in 36 games, starting 22 times for the Texas Longhorns. A savvy veteran, he has recorded 192 tackles in his career, which is third among active Texas defenders. Has earned honorable mention all-Big 12 honors the last two years and has posted six double-digit tackle games in his career. Had 10 starts in 2013, four at middle linebacker and six at weakside linebacker, which demonstrates just how versatile Edmond is within the defense, something the Longhorns will be counting on in 2014.
He was a two-time all-state selection and prep All-American at Daingerfield High School in Daingerfield, Texas. He played in the 2011 U.S. Army All-American Bowl and was a member of ESPNU’s top 150 national prospects. He was ranked as the fourth best inside linebacker and 55th best overall prospect in the country. Tallied more than 400 tackles, 71 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, seven interceptions, 16 forced fumbles and 10 fumble recoveries over his final three prep season. Also played basketball and baseball for Daingerfield.
Got right into the swing of things as a true freshman in 2011, playing in 12 games and posting 16 tackles, two tackles for loss, a forced fumble and pass breakup. In 2012, he started the first 12 games at middle linebacker and finished second on the team in tackles with 103, second in solo tackles with 51 and added six tackles for loss. Earned honorable mention all-Big 12 honors. In 2013, the junior started 10 of 11 games and tallied 73 tackles, two interceptions and five pass breakups despite missing two games due to injury.
