Bio

Tavon Austin is a wide receiver and kick return specialist for the St. Louis Rams. He was a two-time All-American at West Virginia University and won the Paul Hornung Award as a senior in 2012.

Early Years

Austin was born on March 15, 1991 in Baltimore, MD and played football at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. He starred as a running back and return specialist at the school, rushing for 2,660 yards and 34 touchdowns as a senior. He signed a letter of intent to play collegiately at West Virginia University, hoping to play running back at the Division I level.

West Virginia University

After arriving at West Virginia, Austin transitioned from a running back to a wide receiver during his freshman season. He caught 15 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown as a true freshman and also returned a kickoff for a touchdown that season. He became a much bigger weapon on offense as a sophomore, catching 58 passes and scoring a team-high eight touchdowns. He developed into one of the nation’s most dynamic players, hauling in 100 receptions for 1,180 yards as a junior and then making 114 receptions for over 1,200 yards with 12 touchdown receptions as a senior. He was named First-Team All-Big East and First-Team All-American during both seasons and won the Paul Horning Award as the nation’s most versatile player.

St. Louis Rams

Widely seen as one of the top prospects in the 2013 NFL Draft, the St. Louis Rams selected Austin with the eighth overall pick. He signed a four-year, $12.751 million deal and earned a starting spot at receiver during training camp. He had an inconsistent rookie season, playing in 13 games with 418 receiving yards and 151 rushing yards. He scored four touchdowns as a receiver, one as a running back, and one as a punt returner.
