Bio

Thibaut Courtois was born in Bree, Belgium on 11 May 1992. He is considered by many to be one of the hottest goalkeeping prospects in world football and despite his young age, he is already rated by some observers to be amongst the best goalkeepers in Europe.

Courtois began playing youth team football for Bilzen V.V. in 1997 and initially played as a full back. In 1999, he joined Genk's academy, where he started playing as a goalkeeper. He progressed through the ranks and made his debut for the club's first team in 2009, at the age of just 16. For the 2010-11 season, Courtois became the side's number one and played a huge role in their Belgian Pro League title win, keeping a total of 14 clean sheets. At the conclusion of the campaign, he was named as the Goalkeeper of the Year, while he would also go on to receive the club's own award for Player of the Year.

As a result of his solid performances, Courtois earned a move to Premier League side Chelsea in the summer of 2011, but was immediately sent out on loan to Atlético Madrid to gain experience. Upon arriving in Spain, he was quick to establish himself as the club's first choice goalkeeper and kept four clean sheets in his first six matches. Courtois played a major role in the team winning the 2011-12 UEFA Europa League and his performances drew widespread praise. His loan spell was extended at the end of the year and he helped Atlético Madrid to win the UEFA Super Cup in 2012 and the Copa del Rey in 2012-13. Once again, he received huge praise and picked up the Zamora Trophy and LFP Best Goalkeeper award for the 2012-13 season.

At international level, Courtois made his debut for Belgium's national team in 2011, becoming the youngest player to ever play for the senior side in the process.
