DeCoud was born on March 19, 1985 in Oakland, California. He played high school football at Pinole Valley High School in Pinole, California where he was an All-ACCAL selection his senior year.

DeCoud did not see much time on the field at the University of California, Berkeley until his junior year, even though he had 28 tackles as a sophomore. As a junior in 2006, DeCoud had 45 tackles and three pass deflections.
It was his senior season that he broke out. He was third in the Pac-10 Conference with 115 total tackles to go along with one interception, one sack, and two forced fumbles.
DeCoud was drafted by the Falcons with the 98th-overall pick during the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft.
Since 2009, his second season in the NFL, DeCoud has played in every game except for one in 2013. That year, his first as a starter, he recorded 68 tackles, a career-high two sacks, three interceptions and two forced fumbles.
His break-out season came in 2012. He recorded 76 tackles and a career-high six interceptions, the fifth-most in the NFL. He earned his first trip to the Pro Bowl that season.
The Falcons released DeCoud on March 11, 2014.
DeCoud signed a two-year contract with the Panthers on April 10, 2014.
