The Rams had the conference’s offensive player of the year in senior QB Matt Newton, the defensive player of the year in senior LB Rick Crowell and the Liberty Bowl MVP in sophomore TB Cecil Sapp. They kicked off the season with 28-24 win over No. 25/23 Colorado in Denver, and suffered their only setbacks on the road against Arizona State (13-10) and Air Force (44-40).
