#8 Alex Smith, San Francisco 2005

Coming out of the 2005 draft, Smith was one of the more intruiging prospects in recent memory. His athleticism and good arm strength made him the top selection of the 49ers (and sent Aaron Rodgers plummeting down the first round to the Packers).

That decision didn't quite work the way the 49ers thought it would. During his time in San Francisco, Smith totaled only 72 touchdowns while turning the ball over 99 times. His recent improvement, including helping San Francisco to the 2011 NFC title game, made it surprising when he was benched in favor of Colin Kaepernick after suffering a concussion.

Smith has a fresh opportunity to raise his status among No. 1 overall picks as the new starter in Kansas City after an offseason trade.
