Transfer Rumours: Essien linked with FC Dallas
AC Milan midfielder, Michael Essien, has been linked with FC Dallas for several months.
Today, Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport and The Express in the UK have added fuel to the fire, both claiming that the former Chelsea star has turned down West Bromwich Albion, Burnley and Leicester City, in favour of becoming the latest in a list of high profile signings in Major League Soccer.
Essien's agent is Nico Clavijo, son of FC Dallas technical director and former US international, Fernando Clavijo. Rumours existed prior to their professional relationship, however the younger Clavijo did speculatively tweet that Essien could be interested in a move State-side over the summer.
FC Dallas president, Dan Hunt, has not been secretive in his admiration for the Ghanaian international, albeit always mentioning that he admires many players as a fan of the sport.
For FC Dallas, who have two international roster spots, a designated player opening, and a large hole in the midfield, Essien would be the 'destroyer' that the Texans have lacked since the retirement of Daniel Hernandez. The Hunt Sports Group, owners of FC Dallas, tend to favour the development of young designated players, such as Mauro Diaz, however surveys conducted over the winter did focus on the commercial appeal of a big star compared to a balanced younger team that could challenge for MLS Cup.
Reports from Italy suggest that a contract offer has been made to start in March.
Michael Essien's current deal with the Rossoneri ends in June, however Pipo Inzaghi's side look to be trying to shed some of their salary commitments, and revamp the team at the San Siro, after the financial fallout of their first season out of European competition since 1998/99.
