A two-year starter in the Colorado State secondary, Matthews has started all 26 games he’s played in. The redshirt junior packs a wallop at 6-3, 210 pounds and likes to range all over the field to make plays. His four interceptions in 2013 tied for the most since 2009 and his 69 tackles put him fifth on the defense. Matthews is a big guy with very good speed and will be counted on to solidify that Colorado State secondary in 2014.
Matthews was a three-sport star at Judson High School in Converse, Texas, he was one of the top football prospects in the San Antonio area. On his way to first-team all-district and second-team all-area selections as a senior, he racked up 108 tackles, two forced fumbles and two sacks. Missed most of his junior campaign with a broken leg, but returned to the field in time for the state playoffs and still recorded 20 tackles and one interception in two games. He was a standout on the basketball team and was a hurdler on the track team.
As a redshirt freshman in 2011, he traveled with the team on a few road trips, but didn’t see the field. That changed in 2012 when he earned a starting spot in fall camp and never looked back, starting 12 games and recording 71 tackles, fourth on the team. He added one interception and broke up 10 passes. In 2013, Matthews started all 14 games and added 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack.
