Kroft attended Downingtown East High School in Pennsylvania. A consensus three-star recruit, Kroft was a tight end during his sophomore and junior seasons but moved to wide receiver as a senior. He tallied 40 catches for 669 yards and eight scores his senior year as he was named an All-Southeastern Pennsylvania selection by the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Kroft redshirted at Rutgers in 2011 and played in 11 games in 2012. In limited action he made three catches on the season for 59 yards and a touchdown. Kroft’s touchdown reception was a 12-yard grab against Syracuse. He earned a spot on the All-Big East Academic Football Team.
Kroft emerged as a star in 2013. He led the Scarlet Knights in catches and receiving yards with 43 and 573 respectively. His four touchdown catches were tied for second on the squad. SI.com named Kroft an Honorable Mention All-American. His six catches, 133 receiving yards and a touchdown against Arkansas earned him the John Mackey National Tight End of the Week award. A first-team American Athletic Conference selection, Kroft tallied three catches for 43 yards against Notre Dame in the Pinstripe Bowl. He was the only player on the Scarlet Knights to make a catch in every regular season game.
