Tyron Smith is entering his fourth season with the Dallas Cowboys. He is one of the rising stars at left tackle in the NFL after being selected to his first Pro Bowl and garnering second-team All-Pro honors in 2013. Smith gave up just 31 quarterback disruptions on 629 pass-blocking snaps, according to ProFootballFocus.com. On July 30, 2014, he inked an eight-year deal worth a reported $109 million, making Smith the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL.
Early Years & College
Smith was born in Los Angeles, Calif., on Dec. 12, 1990. He attended Rancho Verde High where he earned All-American and All-Region honors while playing along the defensive and offensive lines. Scout.com listed him as the top offensive line prospect in the country. After graduating, Smith went to the University of Southern California (USC) where he started at right tackle and took home first-team All-Pac 10 accolades, as well as the Morris Trophy, given to the conference’s top offensive lineman, in 2010.
The Cowboys selected Smith in the first round of the 2011 NFL draft (ninth overall). Desperate for offensive line help, Dallas wasted no time in choosing Smith, largely considered the best offensive line talent in the 2011 class. Smith started every game, at right tackle, during his rookie campaign. In 2012, he transitioned to left tackle and earned equal praise as a standout run-blocker and pass-protector. Smith allowed just one sack and committed only one penalty in his breakout 2013 season.
