Alualu was born on May 12, 1987 in Honolulu, Hawaii. While at Saint Louis High School in Hawaii, Alualu recorded seven sacks and had 59 tackles on his way to being named the ILH Player of the Year as a senior.
According to Rivals.com, Alualu was the second best prospect in Hawaii and the 24th-best defensive tackle prospect in the country in 2005.

Alualu played in 52 games (39 starts) during his four years at Cal. As a sophomore, his first season as a full-time starter, Alualu had 52 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and one interception.
His best season came in 2009 as a senior. He recorded a career high 65 tackles and a career-high 7.5 sacks, the seventh most in the Pac-10 Conference. He was named to the first-team All-Pac 10 that season.
While he was not expected to be drafted until the late-first or early-second round, Alualu was drafted by the Jaguars with the 10th-overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.
As a rookie, Alualu started 16 games and recorded 38 tackles and 3.5 sacks. He was named to the All-Rookie teams by several news organizations.
After playing defensive tackle his first three seasons, Alualu was moved to defensive end prior to the 2014 NFL Season, where he recorded 44 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
Alualu has not missed a game or a start in any of his first four seasons.
