Uruguay Goes For Broke In Upcoming Qualifiers

Created on Aug. 24, 2013 12:34 PM EST

Uruguay Head Coach Oscar Washington Tabárez came out with the best possible player for a crucial set of matches against Peru and Colombia in this set of World Cup Qualifiers.

One of the stars of the last U-20 team that came in second place in Turkey finally gets his chance as Atlético Madrid's José María Giménez is called up after establishing himself as one of the defensive forces for the Los Charrúas for the future.  His presence could be sooner rather than later as the central defense for Uruguay has been in shambles in the past couple of years.

On the attack, there were some variations to the names.  There is of course the usual names like Diego Forlán, Edinson Cavani, etc.  At this stage, Sebastián Abreu is now on the outs with the national team.  That also brings in new names to the fray such as Espanyol's  Christian Stuani as well as Real Sociedad's Gonzalo Castro.  These two players have been steady performers in their years in Spain and have not been big names or high profile players, but they could be major relievers coming off the bench.

Jorge Fucile also returns to the national team mix after having been plagued with injuries for the past couple seasons after his participation in the World Cup back in 2010.

Also midfielder Egidio Arévalo Ríos was called up to the national team again after being signed by MLS side Chicago Fire.
