Bio

Víctor Valdés i Arribas, usually shortened to Víctor Valdés, was born in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona on 14 January 1982. Known for his shot-stopping ability and accurate distribution, he is one of the most successful goalkeepers in the history of football, in terms of the number of major trophies he has collected. He also holds the record for having won the Ricardo Zamora Trophy, awarded to the La Liga goalkeeper with the lowest goals conceded per game, the most number of times.

Valdés originally joined Barcelona's youth academy in 1992, but when his family moved away, he joined Tenerife. Having returned to Barcelona's youth team in 1995, he worked his way through the ranks, playing for the 'C' team in 2000 and the 'B' team until the 2002-03 season, when he made his breakthrough into the senior team. Initially serving as back up to Roberto Bonano, he established himself as the first choice goalkeeper during 2003-04, playing 44 games in all competitions.

The 2004-05 campaign brought about Valdés' first major success, as Barcelona finished as La Liga champions and he earned his first Zamora Trophy. The following season, he helped the team to win another La Liga crown, as well as the UEFA Champions League, marking his first success in that competition. In the years that followed, Valdés and Barcelona captured numerous additional league titles and collected six different trophies during the 2009 calendar year, including the Champions League, under the management of Pep Guardiola.

In 2010-11, Valdés picked up his third Champions League trophy and contributed towards the team winning yet another league title. Individually, his performances were recognised as he was voted the La Liga Goalkeeper of the Year, won the Zamora Trophy and was included in the ESM Team of the Year. However, in early 2013, Valdés announced his intention to leave at the end of his contract, making the 2013-14 season his last with Barcelona.

At international level, Valdés received his first call up for Spain's senior team in 2005, but did not play his first match for the team until 2010. Despite his huge success at club level, he has struggled to fully establish himself in the national team, due to the presence of several other top goalkeepers, including Iker Casillas and Pepe Reina. However, since 2001, Valdés has also played friendly matches for the unaffiliated Catalonia national team.
